Euthanasia Must Not Be Legalized Essays - 2091 Words

Presently, many cases of euthanasia had occurred around the world. Many a time we will stop and ask whether the person has anymore hope to live as a normal person. At the end it is left to the court to decide whether the people live or die. But why does the patient or the guardian choose euthanasia when they can live a longer time with their loved ones. Some might ask whether it is worth to see your loved ones suffering, wouldn’t it be better to end the suffering? To answer this question we must know what euthanasia means. According to Fergusson(1992) euthanasia which comes from the Greek word ‘eu-thanatos’ which means â€Å"well death† or â€Å"good death†(Fergusson, A. 1992). Euthanasia can also be administered with a living will. One good example is when a person is brain dead. If he had written a living will before he was in that condition those living will have the say on euthanasia. As explained in BBC (n.d), in an occurrence of serious illness or disorder, living wills serve as a set of patient’s desire concerning health care and how they would want to be treated when they are unable to decide on their own. This makes things easy for the doctor and the patient’s loved ones. One of the advantage of a living will as pointed out by BBC(n.d) is that suitable treatment will be given to the patient once the doctor know what the patient wishes are through his/her living will (BBC,n.d). After knowing most of the term in euthanasia let us now discuss about the few countries that legalize it. Countries that legalize mercy killing are Canada, Netherlands, Belgium and Oregon, USA. But there are other countries that had at one time legalized euthanasia but had changed it again. One of the countries that once legalize euthanasia is Australia.
